Compare the delivered bed’s minimum and maximum deck heights, then confirm the actual height with its mattress installed. Check the caster setup, model revision and space for other equipment. Have the care team determine the person’s positioning and transfer needs; a low-height specification is not a fall-prevention guarantee.
- Deck height excludes the mattress.
- Caster configuration can change the minimum height.
- A model’s older and newer versions may differ.
Ask where the height measurement starts and ends
Deck height is measured from the floor to the platform supporting the mattress. Mattress-top height includes the mattress above it. Ask the supplier which one appears in the quote and request the second measurement for the delivered setup.
As a simple illustration, a 7-inch platform plus a 6-inch mattress puts the uncompressed top at about 13 inches. That arithmetic is not a recommended transfer height: mattress compression, positioning and the person’s needs require a separate assessment. Record both heights instead of treating the advertised low point as the finished bed height.
Published examples show why configuration matters
Drive’s product page gives two 15005LP ranges depending on caster placement. Its linked 2021 manual lists 9.5–22.5 inches without the same two-row breakdown. We have kept that difference visible; ask the supplier to resolve it for the actual frame.
Joerns’ 650 lb UltraCare XT manual also distinguishes the base bed from a bed equipped with UltraLock. These are platform measurements, not mattress-top heights, and do not establish local rental availability.
| Bed and published configuration | Deck height range | Source detail |
|---|---|---|
| Drive 15005LP, rolling at low height only | 9.25–23 in | Current product page |
| Drive 15005LP, rolling at any height | 14.81–23 in | Current product page |
| Joerns UltraCare XT, base bed | 7–30 in | 650 lb version manual |
| Joerns UltraCare XT with UltraLock | 7.25–30.60 in | 650 lb version manual |
Match the manual to the delivered bed
Joerns links separate UltraCare XT manuals and parts lists for the earlier 500 lb version and the 650 lb version introduced in December 2023. The newer manual lists 600 lb maximum patient weight and 650 lb safe working load. Do not assign those limits to an older rental frame because the name is the same.
Ask for the model label, applicable manual and package description. Record the minimum height separately from the weight limits. A low frame is not automatically a high-capacity frame, and a large total load figure is not the same as the allowed patient weight.
Check the space under and around the bed
Give the supplier the model of any lift or overbed table you expect to use. Ask whether it works with the proposed bed and at which heights. Drive’s manual specifically requires compatible lifts; a photograph of an open space below the frame is not a compatibility check.
Before delivery, discuss the outside footprint, rail position, wall clearance and cable route. Ask the installer to demonstrate the permitted movements and explain what must remain clear. Use the delivered instructions rather than recreating a setup from another bed’s video.
If a quote mentions rolling at any height, ask what that means for that model. Drive says its homecare beds are not intended for patient transport. Mobility wording should not be read as permission to move an occupied bed between rooms.
Make the height and package part of the quote
Include the height requirement in your request alongside dates and address. Ask the supplier to confirm the actual mattress, controls and caster arrangement in writing. A reservation described only as a full-electric bed leaves the low-height detail unresolved.
Compare the full rental total, not only the bed rate. Request separate answers for mattress charges, delivery, assembly, collection, minimum term and any deposit. Ask what support is available if a control stops working, and which backup components will be included.
If considering purchase too, compare the same configuration and ask who provides installation and later service. Joerns lists battery backup and other options separately in its 2026 specification sheet; a product image does not establish what either offer includes.
Common questions
Is a low bed the same as a hi-low bed?
Height adjustment and minimum height are different facts. A hi-low description tells you to ask about movement; get the published range and delivered configuration to establish how low that specific bed goes.
Should I add rails or a floor mat automatically?
No. FDA recommends individual assessment of bed and rail arrangements. Discuss accessories with the care team and have the supplier confirm compatibility; being offered in a package does not establish that an accessory is appropriate.
Can I remove casters to make the bed lower?
Do not improvise a different configuration. Ask the supplier to follow the model’s approved setup and confirm the resulting height and mobility. Drive’s published options depend on caster placement, not a general instruction to remove wheels.
