A typical full-electric homecare bed powers all three movements. A semi-electric bed powers the head and foot sections but uses a hand crank for overall height. Confirm the exact model and delivered controls; a photograph of a remote alone does not settle the question.
- Head and foot movement is separate from bed height.
- A low minimum height is a model specification.
- Backup operation needs its own explanation.
Which movements are powered?
Drive’s manual distinguishes the full-electric 15005LP, semi-electric 15004P and manual 15003P. These examples show what the labels usually mean. They do not establish every feature of a different rental bed.
| Movement | Full-electric example | Semi-electric example | Manual example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Head section | Powered | Powered | Hand crank |
| Foot section | Powered | Powered | Hand crank |
| Whole bed height | Powered | Hand crank | Hand crank |
Decide who will make each adjustment
Write down the adjustments you expect someone to make, then put a name beside each one. For a semi-electric quote, ask where the height crank sits, whether it can be reached in your planned layout, and whether the person helping can operate it. For a full-electric quote, ask to see the height buttons during setup.
Invacare’s 5310IVC is a concrete example: its height crank is at the foot end. That makes the space beyond the footboard a useful topic for the delivery conversation. Do not choose a layout from mattress length alone.
Full-electric does not mean a particular low height
Powered movement and adjustment range are different specifications. Drive’s 15005LP has two published deck-height configurations depending on caster placement. Ask for the configuration actually being delivered, including the mattress-top height, rather than assuming that the word low describes every bed with electric height control.
If a listing combines a full-electric title with a description of manual height adjustment, leave that feature unresolved until the supplier identifies the frame. A model number or a demonstration is more useful than another general assurance that the bed is electric.
Ask what happens during a power outage
Backup methods differ. The Invacare manual describes an emergency crank for lowering. Drive’s Delta 15033 product page describes battery-assisted lowering of the head and foot sections. Neither example is a promise of normal operation through an extended outage.
Ask the supplier which movements remain possible, which batteries or crank are supplied, where they are kept, and who will demonstrate the procedure. Keep the delivered model’s instructions with the service number. Do not improvise a procedure from a different bed’s manual.
Compare the complete rental package
Put the two quotes beside one another with the same rental dates. Ask each supplier to list the frame model, mattress, rails if selected, delivery, assembly, collection and any minimum term. Treat a missing line as a question rather than an inclusion.
Manufacturer packages are not all identical: Drive lists the 15033 frame alone as well as combinations with different rails and mattresses. A supplier may build its own rental package. Confirm that an accessory shown in a product photograph is included in your written quote.
Common questions
Does semi-electric mean only the head moves?
No. In the examples compared here, both head and foot positioning are powered. The manual task is raising or lowering the entire bed platform. Verify the individual model rather than relying on the shortened word electric.
Is full-electric automatically the better choice?
There is no single choice established by the label. Compare the actual movements, who will operate them, the room layout and the complete rental quote. Discuss any care-specific positioning or transfer requirements with the person coordinating care.
Can a semi-electric bed use the same accessories as a full-electric bed?
Sometimes models share specified parts, but the category alone does not prove compatibility. Give the supplier both the bed and accessory model numbers, including the mattress, and request the approved combination.
Sources & approach
Based on linked supplier, manufacturer and public-agency information. This is source-based research, not hands-on testing or a clinical assessment. Confirm current equipment, terms and availability with the supplier; discuss equipment suitability with your care team.
