Start with the mattress model, its role in the bed system and its cost. A foam replacement mattress, powered air replacement and air overlay are different products. The right care-specific surface should be agreed with the care team; a rental price or product photograph cannot make that decision.
- Ask for a mattress model, not just “standard mattress.”
- Confirm whether it replaces a mattress or goes over one.
- Separate condition, cleaning and ownership from the bed rental.
Three products you may see in a quote
These examples explain product categories. They are not a treatment recommendation or confirmation of local rental stock. Ask which version is in your package.
| Type | Published example | What to clarify |
|---|---|---|
| Foam replacement mattress | Drive Gravity 7: layered foam; several length options | Which model, length and cover are supplied? |
| Powered air overlay | Drive Med-Aire 14025NS: sits over a base mattress | Which base mattress is required and included? |
| Powered air replacement | Drive Med-Aire 14027: mattress replacement system with a control unit | Is the complete mattress-and-control-unit system included? |
Check the whole combination before changing the mattress
Replacement describes a mattress taking the place of the original sleep surface. Overlay describes an additional surface above a base mattress. Those arrangements are not interchangeable: adding thickness can change the relationship between the mattress, frame and rails.
FDA’s bed-system guidance treats the components together. Have the supplier confirm the mattress model and dimensions, any base layer, the frame and the rail configuration as one combination. Do not add a household topper or fill a gap with improvised padding.
Even within one product family, length varies. Drive lists Gravity 7 versions in 76, 80 and 84 inches. A brand name alone will not identify the right one. Use our accessory guide for the separate questions about extension kits and mounting parts.
Get a separate line for the mattress
Ask for these answers on the quote; companies may handle mattresses differently.
- What is the mattress model, and is its price included, added per rental period or a one-time purchase?
- If I choose another surface, does the original mattress charge disappear?
- Do the cover, pump, tubing and any required base mattress arrive together?
- At the end of the rental, which items are collected and which belong to me?
- What happens to the charges if the supplied surface needs to be changed?
Ask about condition and cleaning
Have the supplier state whether the mattress and cover are new or previously used. If reused, ask what inspection and cleaning process was completed, who checked the cover and internal mattress, and how you report a problem on delivery.
FDA recommends inspecting covers for damage and checking beneath them for staining, moisture and wear. It also advises manufacturer-directed cleaning and disinfection, replacement of damaged covers, and removal of damaged or visibly stained mattresses. A freshly wiped outer cover does not answer every condition question.
Ask the supplier to handle the inspection and any replacement before use. Request the delivered model’s cleaning instructions rather than choosing a household chemical from memory. Record existing marks on the delivery paperwork so condition and later damage charges are clear.
For an air system, ask for a demonstration
The control unit is part of the equipment you will live with. Ask where it will sit, how its tubing is routed, what each alarm means, whom to call after hours and what the instructions say about a power interruption. Ask who sets and checks any care-specific settings.
Features differ. Drive’s comparison chart lists a visual low-pressure alarm for 14025NS and audible plus visual low-pressure alarms for 14027. It does not list a power-failure alarm for either. Do not assume that every powered surface has the same warnings or backup behavior.
Leave delivery with a clear record
Keep the mattress and pump model numbers with the bed model, service number and agreement. Have the installer explain the delivered equipment. If it differs from the quote, request an updated item list and compatibility confirmation.
For a care-specific change, include the person coordinating care and the equipment supplier in the same conversation. Tell them what has changed and ask for a documented replacement plan, including installation, collection and revised charges.
Common questions
Does a hospital bed rental always include a new mattress?
Do not assume either inclusion or new condition. Ask for both in writing, plus whether the mattress is a purchase or rental. Condition checks still matter: FDA recommends inspection of the cover and the mattress beneath it.
Can I use my own mattress?
Only after the supplier verifies the specific mattress with the frame and accessories. Matching the advertised length is not a complete compatibility check. Thickness, movement and compression can change gaps around a rail.
Which is better: foam or air?
The product category does not establish the appropriate surface for an individual. Bring any care requirements to the care team, then ask the supplier for a compatible model and a complete quote. This guide compares rental questions, not clinical effectiveness.
